Final Presentation Semester 1, Design 3, June 3 '09

I prepared a power point presentation to go along with my drawings and working model for the final presentation. Here are some details of what I presented.... unfortunately couldn't photograph everything.... think I was too sleepy on that day hahah

I started explaining to the critics how I got my Idea for this project. I first visited the Auckland city council website to just nose around for anything that I could use and I found some stats about the city, about why people like Auckland CBD (Cause my site lies right in the heart of the CBD/ City Area) along with numbers from their latest survey/census?? in 2007

Picture
So this is how Auckland promotes its city: Rich, diverse, lots to shop, relax and chill which of course seems like a good place to visit and work

Picture
Until this figure caught my attention.
300,000 people come to the City Centre everyday
Out of the 300,000, ONLY 2% actually lives in the city and most of the people are young adults ages 17-30 ish, very few families live in the city...

Picture
Which of course I find very shocking for a city, this means everyone relies mostly on their cars to drive down to the city everyday, It is still the main method of transportation, resulting in heavy traffic congestion especially during business hours

Picture
So then you start to wonder, if Auckland city is so rich in life during the day, what happens at night with so many young people living in the city without their families...

Picture
And so this is what the young generation do at night....cause after all theres nothing else to do in terms of social life. Too much of it is happening, too many crazy people at night which is very very different from the daytime as pictured in the slides mentioned earlier where Auckland City is a rich city that is 'happening'

Picture
In the parts of the city where there are no clubs or night time shops, nothing happens, I revisited the site at night (Durham St) and it felt like I was in purgatory, lifeless and dead

Picture
So this is where I want to design a "Para-Site" or a temporary living type shelter for a young family of four to convey the idea that you can work and live in the city. This type of living is not a typical home but its a sort of adapted way of living in the city, obviously theres no luxury of a big house but it offers the convenience of avoiding hours of travel to the city

Picture
Again, just a mention that this is the site that i have chosen and I have to design a parasite building for my  temporary living concept for a young family in relation to the host building as pictured

Picture
I chose to draw inspiration from the silver fern because I wanted something relevant and current. The silver fern is a NZ icon and in 2011, we are hosting the Rugby World Cup and a lot of people are going to come in to visit the city. By designing this kindof parasite building, hopefully the visitors can catch a glimpse of something special about Auckland, in this case it may be the parasite architecture, so the form of the parasite itself had to be visually appealing

Picture
The idea is that one single component makes up the entire form of the fern so I made this the rule of thumb during the designing process, I was interested in capturing some sort of movement in the form of the parasite building itself

My earlier developments

These are pictures of my final model and how it is attached to the host building

There is an internal vertical garden that can be lit up at night, it helps in terms of greenery and privacy for the occupants

Picture
When all lights go out at night, the facade glows. This evokes a strong feeling of presence and i am hoping that this concept supports the idea that the city can be a living area for families and a parasite like this can improve the social and practical side of having temporary living for families in the city.

section drawing and floor plan will be added after I get my presentation material back from marking at the end of June

Moving on with further developments, Looking closer into the silver  fern to generate ideas :
1) A single component of the  leaf  joins in a  certain order to form the silver fern shape (MODULAR)
2)The flatness and the challenge to create volume out of a flat surface
3)The fuild transition of scales between  leaf components making up the silver fern shape

The abstraction process led to a dominant form which I felt was visually engaging and I wanted to come up with a modular process to dictate the form

The outcome : to attach the parasite structure at the side of the host building facing High Street to engage more walking pedestrians, possible using it as a fashion statement as well (since host building is a fashion boutique)

A view inside structure for possible interior spaces...

Note from critics: Consider the landscaping of not only host building but also surrounding area to strengthen ideas and concepts. Cut into host building and use some of its space if needed, explore through section drawings, and continue on with initial fairy lights idea.

I designed  this model to help clarify my ideas a little bit, there are some moments within the design which really convey what I'm trying to achieve  but still a little loose, anyways let the model do the talking

Following up and adding stuff on what I worked on and presented last week at TSE

The idea  of using structural elements to wrap life, life as in the occupants of the building.
Drawing relates to changes in scale and continuity in the language of the whole design
.

With all the good stuff going in my head, unfortunately the whole place is deserted at night, critic described Auckland CBD as a wetland: alive during the day but at night its a place only for clubbing, drinking, and casino and also hobos, yup... hobos (homeless ppl) . Obviously not making the place a suitable environment for kids so the small domestic scale parasite has to have a good place for social interaction because families would not go out at night i.e. need to design something that is worth attraction people to move into the parasite located in the CBD.

Taking that into consideration, and site is shaded from sunlight for most of the day, I went on to design an open plan parasite, an initial one highlighting the ideas I have conveyed so far. The triangular shade lets sunlight in the day and provides  privacy at the same time,it is held  by the ribs in white (main structural pattern holding the structure in place and changes in scale from one end to the other)

Critic commented that:
I should try to avoid a modular structure and work with the  fairy lights
Bring back the koru idea because it is only metaphorically present in fairy lights
And if I continue on this path, need  to justify angular relationship of structure to koru because my design and sketches involving curves to a  certain degree but  was not much evident in the model.

To start off with, the site is located at 53 Durham Street, Auckland City.

Objective: To build a parasite on the present site for a  family of four.

High street is filled with life and character, highly decorated with cafes and boutiques along with some small businesses. Beautiful classical & modern architecture is blended  with commercial ugly high rise parking lots as shown in the picture below. Located not far from Skytower which is in the heart of  the city.

I sketched my first impression of the site. The colours represent the haptic experience i felt, which I consider to be an important quality to consider before designing

I draw inspiration from the silver fern and the koru which represents life, a life waiting to be unwrapped from within and in almost endemic to Aotearoa aka New Zealand, particularly embraced by the Maori.

Model below shows light studies at 1:200 scale, the site is marked  with a compass in the middle of the picture
